Hey friends, hope everyone’s well.
I’m feeling low-energy this morning. ‘Tis the season: cold weather, young kids at school and daycare, the ever-circulating virome. Often the last thing I feel like doing when I’m down is to meditate. And yet, I’ve learned from experience that sitting often makes me feel better. Sometimes a lot better.
I think the reason is that every time we meditate, we open ourselves to a hard-to-describe nourishment. While this nourishment probably does have a salutary effect on our physical immune system – there’s research to this effect – I’m thinking more about our psycho-spiritual immune system, if we can call it that. A growing in capacity, and a healing too. Sometimes we can even feel it happening – a subtle sense of things reorganizing under the surface. Shifting and settling, emptying and rebuilding.
That’s what this week’s meditation is about. Every time we deliberately sit and do nothing, we prepare the ground for different mind-body medicines to come pouring in. What are they? I can think of at least six: relaxation and simplicity, openness and care, mystery and interconnection. No health insurance required.
You can do this meditation when you’re feeling poorly. You can do it when you’re feeling great. The nourishment comes regardless. You can even calibrate your dose: a short meditation above, a longer one below.
This community is also nourishing for me. The relationships, the opportunity to make meaning out of the exploded bits of my life. The curiosity piqued by tracking other people‘s practice, being in proximity with other actual humans at an existential level. It’s like we get to hang out below the level of content and “right” opinion and the ever-changing news of the world. How strange and excellent that we get to do this. Life could have gone any way, but it went this way. And here we all are. It’s a mystery.
May that mystery nourish you today, and every day.
