Wow .. Saturday morning here in the UK .. what feels like the first sunshine ☀️ of Spring.. I sit in a sunny spot looking across my garden .. and just bliss out to this !
Thanks Big J for these small miraculous doses of kindness !
I’m in portland Oregon and it has been raining for about a century—got a mud pool in the backyard. And also woke to a sunny day. A miracle indeed—combined with this lovely gem of a meditation!
I always read your posts when the come in on Friday and look forward to sitting "with you" on Saturday. Between reading this and waking up this morning I developed a wicked snotty headcount, so as I was digging around for some cold meds this morning, bizarrely found a pealable face mask and spa like foot scrub booties (I swear I have never seen these things before, it took me a while to figure out wth the bootie things were). I laughed out loud and realized that this means that I CAN have a super deluxe spa day meditation today. Thank you universe 💅 p.s. adding "burnt out cutie" mugs/tees to the growing list of dream merch for folks working in the social sectors.
Thanks, Tim! I appreciate the comment, is a fellow teacher who specializes in neurodivergent humans, I know you get it.
Kind of feel like I buried the lead in this one. I want people to get the juicy spa burnout meditation, AND … there’s a lot of ideas in the main post part of the post about how neurodiversity is relevant for everyone, ideas I’m still very much in the middle of working out!
It’s a rich and meaningful post indeed. I got the connection. I see so many students and working folks with ADHD who are both susceptible to burnout or are actively recovering from burnout. From my own experience - it feels like intense creation of ideas and energy, yet not enough capacity, resources, or management to do it all! That’s where meditation comes in, to welcome clarity and focus.

I have at least one ND human in each of my classes this semester. For two of three, my classroom dynamics are painful, even when they arrive ready to participate (clocked by eye contact, smiling, willingness to engage). Then something happens that cuts the participation off. Maybe the 5 minutes was all they needed? I wish I understood. Knew better how to engage and release them from expectations to engage. When you figure this out, please let us know!❤️
Interesting to hear your share here Mickey, I appreciate the care in it. I’m no expert, but it does sound a lot like classic ND burnout/overwhelm. In the autism community there’s a lot written about how the bottom-up processing style of constantly having to negotiate and renegotiate the same details that others take for granted – how it takes up tons of energy and leads to burn out much faster.
I highly recommend Unmasking Autism by Devon Price for a very rich and nuanced discussion of this. I think that book is one every human should read, cause it’s not only about autism, it’s really about all the ways we hide how we are - usually without knowing that’s what we’re doing - are the hidden costs of that to ourselves and to our relationships and communities.
Jeff, thanks for the book rec above. Although as a learning specialist I worked with many ADD / ADHD students over the decades, I know relatively little about autism. Just added Unmasking Autism to my list.
I’m going through a difficult time right now and the meditation felt like a little reprieve. I really liked the swipe the thoughts from your forehead instruction. As always I’m grateful for your help, Jeff.
This left me boneless. Surrendering all this burden to nature—which surely can do better job right now—felt so good. Thank you for this hypnotic and healing meditation, Jeff. And the accompanying essay is so rich. I was reading it last night and my tween son on the spectrum was reading over my shoulder. I could see his chest swell a bit in gratitude when he read your words. So grateful for you, Jeff!
So that slow wipe of my hand across my forehead was pretty much the cucumbers on the eyes of this week’s photo, but for my busy brain. It felt grateful to be seen, loved, and soothed. I think it curled up for a minute or so before it started yipping again. And I soothed it again. A gesture reminding my whole self that this was a moment to slow down, be grateful, & show love, kindness, and understanding to myself. Thank you.

A centuries worth of rains soon coming to an end I hope! It’s a sunny day here, three hundred clicks north - miracle of miracles

😂 love this, secret bootees for super cuties
I am very excited to do this meditation when I get home just based on the name of it alone. I’ll be even cuter after my manicure 💅🏻😂
Ha!
Best meditation ever. I need to do nothing more often:) Thank you for this.
You’re welcome, good to hear from you as always, Melissa
Important and insightful post! Neurodiversity acceptance and understanding within ourselves and others is a powerful way to heal and grow.

Hi Jeff! This meditation was exactly what I needed, absolutely fabulous! I echo Kellye’s sentiment… just the title alone gave me a lift! ❤️

Aaaaah.
So. . . good. . . to. . . . rest. . . . my. . . . mind.
Settling down. Letting it all go.
Thank you my friend, for these luxurious and sweet moments of. . . . nothingness. 💕

I loved this one. ‘Let the air have its way with you’ made me instantly let go of the way I was controlling my breathing. Thank you

Ooooh I loved this one. Some wise words there at the end 😊
Thank you, that felt great :)

Sorry to hear you’re going through a hard time Daniela, glad you’re here.
